Mission Statement
Within a safe and supportive
environment, the mission of the Galena Unit School District #120 is to
empower every student with the knowledge and skills to become a
life-long learner and a responsible, contributing member of society.
Galena Middle School is a
fully carpeted and air conditioned “home” to the
District’s fifth through eighth grade students and Family T.I.E.S. preschool.
The State of Illinois has
recognized Galena Middle School as one of twenty-seven lead
middle schools in the state. All of the academic classes are offered to the students in an
interdisciplinary setting.
GMS also offers a Gifted and Talented enrichment
program to students in English, Reading, Math, Science and
Social Studies. Also
included in the curriculum are exploratory classes at all
grade levels on a nine-week schedule, which include Computers,
Vocal Music, Art, Sign Language, Speech, Spanish, and Careers.
Galena Middle School has
recently adopted a character program entitled Character
Counts! Ingrained
in the curriculum are lessons promoting Trustworthiness,
Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.
The GMS Advisory Program also meets regularly in small
group settings to promote positive character.
The key assumption of the
Galena Middle School curriculum is that a learner has mastered
some skills and basic knowledge but is not ready for the
academic specialization of the high school. In order to address these needs, it is our belief that the
total school staff must function as a team, along with
parents, students, and the community to create and maintain a
middle school environment which encompasses organizational
patterns that direct the energy and vitality of emerging
adolescents toward the realization of their potential.
