Chase Dittmar Scholastic Bowl
Chase Dittmar is this week's Pirate Competitor of the Week. According to Coach Jenkins, “Chase had his best meet so far this season for the scholastic bowl team. He correctly answered 10 tossup questions of the 48 he heard, making him the highest scorer in two Pirate wins versus Warren, and bringing his season average up to 9.6%.”

Oliver Ortega Scholastic Bowl - Oliver Ortega also had his best meet of the season so far for the scholastic bowl team. Coach Jenkins said, “Oliver correctly answered 8 tossup questions of the 42 he heard, making him the second-highest scorer in two Pirate wins versus Warren, and bringing his season average up to 8.97%.”
Gracie Furlong Varsity Girls Basketball - Gracie had a huge week against 2 of the top teams in the area. Coach Watson commented, “On January 30th vs the 24-4 Orangeville Broncos, Gracie scored 30 points, had 10 rebounds and 7 steals. Gracie had 16 of her 30 points in the second half, to help turn a 2 point halftime lead into an 18 point victory. Gracie’s encore was against 23-5 River Ridge/Scales Mound on Wednesday, February 1st. Gracie had 19 points, 11 rebounds and 3 steals to propel her team to a big NUIC-West victory.”
Myles Schumacher Varsity Boys Basketball - This week in 3 games Myles averaged 4 points 4 rebounds and 2 assists in helping his team go 2-1 this week. Coach Wienen said, “Myles has been a great addition to our varsity team this year. He brings great energy to every game/practice, is a great on ball defender, great rebounder and can finish at the rim. As only a sophomore, Myles sees 8-12 minutes a game at the varsity level, but every one of those minutes is huge for us. Myles is a kid that I can put on the other team's best player and he can shut them down. One of Myles biggest attributes to our team is his court vision and his ability to get to the basket anytime he wants to. Myles has the 2 of the quickest steps I've seen in a basketball player in a long time. He is a very sound basketball player that you know when his name is called, he's gonna give 100% each second, he's out there! Those are the basketball players every coach likes and I'm glad Myles is on our team!”
Emma Blaum Speech - Emma qualified for the Sectionals in two events by placing 1st at the regional competition on Saturday. “Not only did she qualify for sectionals by taking first place in the Region in BOTH her events; Emma was part of an unbreakable three way tie for first place in Radio Speaking. This is something that doesn't happen much in Speech competitions. Next week Emma will advance to the Sectional in DeKalb. "Emma is such a wonderful public speaker," said Coach Susan Bookless. "I think that she is hitting her stride at just the right time. I can't wait to see where this takes her." Emma is also team captain of the Speech Team this year and sets an example for the newer members of the team. "She shows them what can happen if they come to practice and work with their coach," said Bookless. "That kind of leadership makes the whole team stronger."
Julia Dominiak Speech - Julia Dominiak is a sophomore on the speech team for the first time this year. She placed third in the category of Original Oratory and also qualified for the Sectional Tournament. "It was so fun to watch Julia qualify," said Coach Susan Bookless. "She worked so hard for it, practiced so much for this tournament and really wanted to make it to the next level. But she was also genuinely surprised that she qualified. Her smile as she realized she was going to DeKalb was one of my favorite parts of the whole day."
Sam Amaya JV Basketball - This week, Sam averaged 12.5 points per game in efforts to help our JV and freshman teams go a combined 4-0 this week. Coach Peebles said, “Sam does a great job at bringing 110% day in and day out. Between freshman and JV games, Sam has both come off the bench and started this year. He is always ready for his number to be called and willing to do whatever it takes to help us win.”
